This blog post is going to be the ultimate guide to a timeless and classic home. 

I’m guessing if you’re here you are also wanting to achieve the look of a classic and timeless home. Much like a Nancy Meyers movie, a Ralph Lauren showroom, or an impeccable interior decorator taste. I love a touch of Southern charm or grand millennial, this style is more of a new classic style. 

So what does a timeless home mean? It’s an interior style that is elegant, traditional, and classic. It doesn’t follow trends and usually leans into the character of the home. This style will remain beautifully curated for decades. 

This look is perfect for longevity in the pieces you find because you’re not leaning into the revolving door of trends. Making these style so easy to obtain, while looking chic and sophisticated for years to come. 

Foundations of a Timeless Home

Neutral Color Palettes

This consists of soft whites, creams, beiges, and muted tones. If you curate your home based on classics your decor will feel consistent throughout. However, I do think some classic colors do really well, like blues, sage green and mauve pinks. If done right these also look really cohesive and timeless.

Classic Architectural Details

When you step into an old estate you will typically find architectural details like crown molding, wall molding, wainscoting, built-ins, and coffered ceilings. These are all details that add value and give your home a timeless interior design. 

Built-in shelves are beautiful and functional whether they are beautifully decorated or full of curated books from over time. 

Wall and ceiling upgrades add interest and texture to a normally flat surface. This is going to draw your eye and add texture. If you place items within sections of wall molding it can look even more curated. Think of a normal wall-mounted tv but inside of gorgeous wall molding. It’s instantly better and looks more thoughtfully placed. 

Quality Over Quantity

Having a timeless home includes having timeless pieces. Typically these are well-made and meant to withstand years of wear. Look for furniture pieces that are made from all wood or as close as you can. 

Don’t worry. Sometimes this look and gathering the right things can take time. 

For a more budget-friendly option to collect these pieces check out thrift stores, antique malls, garage sales, and estate sales. You can normally find these at a lower cost but they may need a bit of TLC to glow again. 

If you’re looking for new pieces, aim for a timeless design. Avoid sharp corners and boxy design. Most vintage-style furniture is full of curves and rounded edges as well as small details. I think classic home decor is made through the blending of different materials and textures to create a cohesive blend. It looks carefully curated over time.

Statement Pieces

Most classic interiors highlight statement pieces in each room. In the bedroom, it might be a stunning four-poster or canopy bed paired with rich wood nightstands. In a living room you could find a Chesterfield sofa with a simple coffee table. Or a classic slip-cover sofa with an antique coffee table. 

Timeless Materials

Look for high-quality fabrics and materials. Some specific ones that add value are linen, velvet, real wood, marble and brass. 

If you are going towards the light coastal traditional look, avoid the velvet and incorporate more textures like wicker and rattan. 

If you’re going for the richer, dark decor lean into the leather and velvet and avoid linen. 

Mixing Old & New

Blend vintage finds with modern pieces by complementing the textures and tones. If I were using a new upholstered bed frame, pair it with a vintage dark mahogany nightstand. You can also take the same process into smaller vignettes around the home. The balance between new and old creates a timeless curated look.

When creating a classic home design style be sure to add in traditional patterns like stripes, florals, chinoiserie, and plaids. Don’t be afraid to add feminine touches like ruffles either. However, do think about a cohesive color scheme when doing this. Like, don’t pair a red and green plaid with pink peony florals. I would recommend a beige or light blue gingham instead. 

Classic Artwork & Framing

Consider adding classic artwork and intricate frameworks throughout your home. Things like paintings, gallery walls, wood, and gold frames. 

To find good paintings on a budget check your local antique mall or estate sales. If you’re looking to invest, you can always have your very own painting commissioned by a local artist or an artist on Etsy. 

For frames, definitely check thrift stores. If you don’t like the art inside of it you can always replace it with something you do. You can find digital art downloads on Etsy to fill these.

Styling your bookshelves is a great way to add character and display heirlooms and collections. A great way to display books, especially ones you’d like to read is to buy the hardcover version and remove the dust jacket. Coffee table books are also great to lay flat and use for stacking. 

Glass box or porcelain trinket trays are great for bowl filler or displaying collections.

Layered Textures

A big key in classic interior design is layering textures. This is going to give you the timeless home decor you’re looking for. You can layer rugs, throws, drapes, and upholstered furniture. 

Layer a jute rug with a blue oriental rug. Your knitted throw blanket with a gingham throw pillow. Layer your drapes by having linen roman shades. Mix your upholstered furniture with different colors, prints, leather and wood.

Does your home have a “never use the big light” rule? Mine does. We always use a secondary warmer light like lamps and sconces. It creates a more calm lighting that feels warm and inviting.  

You can also incorporate a chandelier for more warm lighting. A timeless decor choice is to add a glass or crystal chandelier to your formal dining room. 

Scent & Atmosphere

Create a calm, welcoming atmosphere by adding candles, and fresh flowers, with classic fragrances like lavender and citrus.

Utilizing built-ins, vintage armoires and stylish baskets for storage helps add to the classic style. 

Decluttering with Style

While this decor style does lean more maximalist, it’s all intentional items. Keep your space decluttered and curated by only keeping items you love and are meaningful. 

Timeless Kitchen & Bath

Timeless choices for kitchens and bathrooms will always be subway tile, marble-style counters, and shaker cabinets. These choices can easily be added to or styled differently for the season or if you change your style. 

Bringing the Outdoors In

Classic Garden Elements

Most classic homes have a greenery element used in the decor. Try adding boxwoods, topiaries, and fresh flowers in vases to bring in that element. 

Natural Materials

In timeless designs often timeless materials are used. These are going to be all-natural materials like wood, stone, and woven materials.

Take inspiration from English gardens to create a cozy outdoor space. Pavers and pea gravel are always timeless with a bright green lawn

On porches use wicker furniture or a rocking chair or two. These are timeless pieces always found.

For a timeless and classic home, you’ll want to skip fast furniture like Amazon and Ikea. Avoid anything overly modern, think chrome, glass, sharp boxy shapes, and trendy colors like oranges and yellows.

How to Incorporate Trends Subtly

If you see a trend you just have to participate in, add it in small elements. Like a trinket on the coffee table or a small item in a vignette.
